Sir Garfield Sobers: 1936–2026

Jim Davis, creator of the Garfield comic strip Garfield, famously said:

"It's amazing what one can accomplish when one doesn't know what one can't do."

This quote perfectly described the explosive exploits of the ‘Garfield’ of the cricket field, ever since he made his way into the national side at age 17: including the six hundred minutes spent at Sabina Park scoring the world's highest score of 365 (untill Lara surpassed the mark), six sixes of six balls at Swansea, and 254 at Melboune facing the fury of Lillee and co.

Off the cricket field, he was equally towering as an avid golfer and passionate author.

Today he is no longer in our midst, but he leaves behind these powerfully poignant words of his memoirs to remind the high and mighty practitioners of today to keep the bar high before raising a toast:

"As I have always said, I have never made a run for me. Records meant nothing. The team was important."
